Course
Description Spanish II aims to further develop your knowledge
and skills in the language and culture of the Hispanic world. Listening,
speaking, reading and writing are emphasized with a focus on the students’
ability to communicate in the target language.
We also explore the geography, culture, and news-worthy events of the
Spanish-speaking world. This will be a productive and semester of learning and
fun. I am here to help you learn Spanish, but this won’t come without hard work
on your part. Commit yourself to constant learning and you can succeed!
II.
Units of
Study This course will
primarily be divided into four thematic units which will be explored in the
target language: Travel, Shopping, Daily Life and Foods. These thematic
units correspond to chapters 5 through 9 of our class textbook, Descubre I. More information on these curricular units may
be found at the World Language Section of the Cobb County School District
Website.
III.
The Standards Along with compliance to the ACTFL world language guidelines, this
course reflects the five strands of the National and Georgia performance
standards for foreign languages: Communication, Culture, Connections,
Comparisons, and Communities. More information regarding these standards maybe
found at www.georgiastandards.org
IV.
Texts
and Resources Our primary course
textbook will be DESCUBRE I: UNIT 5
to UNIT 9 along with an individual student workbook. Students will also
be required to create online accounts at
www.vhl.central.com for this text. Classwork, quizzes and homework will be
assigned via this Supersite. For more information on how to create a student online
account, please refer to your student CTLS account. Other web related language
sites and hardcopy resources will be provided in class or via my blog clasedequinn@blogspot.com and in CTLS to reinforce
or review a given unit.
V.
Methodology The
methodology for our course is based on a communicative approach, because the most important aspect of our class is students are
able to speak and understand Spanish in the real world. For this reason, our classes are conducted in
Spanish and our students can put the knowledge acquired in and outside of the
classroom into practice. We aim to help students become independent language
users, them in guiding acquiring and improving their comprehension and oral skills
as well as written expression through grammar, vocabulary
and socio-cultural elements of the language.
VI.
Methods
of Assessment and Evaluation: We will use
a variety of assessments, systematically designed and implemented to help you
progress in the development of your reading, writing and speaking skills in the
target language. Formative assessments,
such as quizzes and daily class participation, help further your vocabulary and
proficiency goals. Summative assessments, such as unit tests and thematic
projects will help evaluate your unit mastery.
VII.
Grading
policy Grading categories
generally include several of the following: tests, quizzes, homework, projects,
and classwork.) All students will have access to weekly grades in synergy.
Please refer to your studentvue accounts and the Cobb County School District
Website for information regarding your online student accounts.
Formative assessments (
i.e. verbal or presentational
assessments and quizzes) – 30%
Summative Assessments ( i.e. unit
tests and or projects) – 60%
Final Exam/SGM – 10%
VIII.
Cheating
Policy: Cheating
occurs any time a student solicits, receives, or offers unauthorized help on
any assignment. This includes class work, homework, projects, special
assignments, and tests. Whenever a student is guilty of cheating, the teacher
shall collect the student's paper, mark a zero for the work and notify the
parent(s) and the appropriate administrator. When writing reports,
presentations, essays, projects, etc., students must give credit to all sources
used, including the internet. If caught cheating, reassessment policy does not
apply.
IX.
Reassessment
Policy: Any
student will be able to retake an assessment if they score less than an 80 on a
unit test. Students must attend at least two tutoring sessions prior to
reassessment. Once they reassess, the
highest grade they can receive is an 80.
X.
Homework
policy Students
are expected to have homework assignments completed at the beginning of the
class. You must complete ALL work
assigned for Homework to receive full credit.
XI.
Late
work policy Because of the emphasis on oral listening
and speaking skills, student attendance and participation are extremely
important. Due to the fast-paced nature
of the course, ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE WITHIN THE ASSIGNED TIME FRAME.
Exceptions may only be considered with an Excused Absence.
XII.
Make-Up
Policy It is your responsibility to make up work
due to an excused absence. Please refer to your CTLS account and our class blog
clasedequinn@blogspot.com regarding
any assignments or notes you have missed.
You must turn in your missed work within three days of returning from
an EXCUSED absence.
XIII.
Tutoring
– I will be available for tutoring on Thursdays from
3:35 – 4:45 pm to review any topics.
Assignments, or projects that student may need assistance with. Arrangements
may be made to meet at an alternative time if discussed previously. In order to
