Course Description: Spanish I is an introduction to a Novice Level of Spanish. We will work towards understanding the Target Language at a basic level to communicate with simple verbal or written commands. We will strengthen conversation skills through consistent practice and vocabulary review. Students will continue their progress toward mastery of the language by listening, speaking and writing Spanish. We also be exposed to the different cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. This will be a productive and semester of learning and fun. I am here to help you learn Spanish, but this won’t come without hard work on your part. Commit yourself to constant learning and you can succeed!
Grading Scale: The grade will be distributed based on the school grading scale and compliance to the World Languages Department guidelines. This course reflects five strands of the National and Georgia performance standards for foreign languages: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. Assignments will be communicative (interpretive, interpersonal, and/or presentational) with at least two other strands incorporated. Performance assessments will be either formative (for example participation or verbal assessments) or summative (projects or unit tests). The grades will be scored to the following percentages.

Tests/Projects/Quizzes – We will generally have one quiz per week and one unit test or unit project every two weeks. Projects may be assigned periodically and are given the same weight as tests. REMEMBER : You will have a quiz every week. BE PREPARED
Class Participation- Active participation is of critical importance for good performance in a language class. Arriving tardy to class, disruptive behavior, being off task, lacking materials or not completing assignments will influence participation grade. Student must follow the behavior code in student handbook. No food, cell phones or devices allowed without teacher permission.
Daily Work/Assignments: Students will be responsible for completing this work in class after a concept is introduced. This may be teacher-created, from textbook or group activity. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE PERMITTED UNLESS THERE IS AN EXCUSED ABSENCE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.
Class Materials: A three ringed binder or three section notebook preferably with pocket dividers is required. Notebooks should be divided into warm-ups, vocabulary and grammar review. You must bring a pen or pencil to write with. A Spanish-English Dictionary is highly recommended. You must bring all required resources to class everyday.
Textbook: A variety of textbooks will be used in class along with the traditional DESCUBRE I: UNIT 1 to UNIT 4.
Online Activities: Students will also be assigned classwork and homework on the textbook Supersite and other web related language sites that should be completed in a timely manner and with maximum effort. The purpose of the online work is to preview or reinforce concepts covered in class.

Expectations and Classroom policies
-Be on time.
-Come to class ready and prepared. (Bring your materials every day)
- Be respectful and courteous at all times. Avoid profanity language.
-Participate in class daily routine using the target language. A participation and language usage grade will be taken weekly. Use Spanish. Feel free to participate!
-Do classwork, assignments and projects when requested by the teacher (and on time!)
-Keep your class clean. Avoid food, drinks, candy or chewing gum. Bottled water is allowed.
- Demonstrate academic honesty by doing your own work—do not copy assignments or answers (read the Academic Honesty policy below). Do not allow others to copy your work. Be truthful about reasons for missing assignments, tests, projects, etc.
Classroom Behavior: Students are to follow the behavior code in student handbook. CELLPHONES, EARBUDS/HEADPHONES must be drop off on the assigned place at the beginning of the class. HOODIES/HATS must be taken off for the entire class.
Homework Students are expected to have homework assignments completed at the beginning of the class. You must complete ALL work assigned for Homework to receive full credit.
Re-Takes: No retakes for quizzes are allowed. It is student’s responsibility to review and study every day. As per school policy, if you get a grade lower than 70 on a Unit Test, you qualify for a retake and the maximum grade will be 80. You have within three days from the time you received your grade. Student is responsible for making arrangements and attend the retake Test on time.
Late assignments: Because of the emphasis on oral listening and speaking skills, student attendance and participation are extremely important. Late work will NOT be accepted. Due to the fast-paced nature of the course, ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE WITHIN THE ASSIGNED TIME FRAME. Exceptions may only be considered with an Excused Absence.
Incomplete assignments: incomplete work will receive a minimum grade of 70 only if the assignment has some quality of work. If the student is confused about an assignment, he /she must communicate with the teacher about any difficulties, previously to due dates.
Attendance: South Cobb High School’s attendance policy, which is found in the student handbook, will be enforced along with the SCHS student code of conduct.
Make-up Procedure for Excused Absence:
It is your responsibility to make up work due to an excused absence. Ask your teacher about any assignments or notes you have missed and refer to clasedequinn@blogspot.com You must turn in your assignment within three days of returning from an EXCUSED absence.. Do not expect to make up work a month or even a week after you were gone, it won’t be accepted.
Tutoring:
I will be available for tutoring help on Thursday (3:30 to 4:00). Advanced notice is REQUIRED! Individual tutoring sessions may be arranged upon request, by completing the form NECESITO AYUDA POR FAVOR.
